Out of the Weald
Distance does not simply add mileage to a quotation. It raises the packing standard, because a load on the road for hours works against itself in ways a fifteen-minute run never does — and on a load of old furniture that difference is the entire argument.
A drawer that eases open on a motorway does more damage in six hours than a whole day of carrying.
What changes over distance
Why old furniture needs more over distance
Because it is jointed rather than glued and screwed. Drawers ease open, loose backs work, veneer lifts at a corner that has been rubbing for four hours, and a marble top finds the one gap in its packing.
None of that happens on a short local run, which is why a firm that packs both to the same standard is fine on one and unlucky on the other. On a long move we would rather do the fragile categories ourselves even where you would happily do them locally.
The first hour decides the day
Leaving TN13 northwards or westwards means the M25, and shortly after that the Dartford Crossing or a long way around it. Which of those, and at what hour, is the biggest single variable in a long day out of this district.
So the departure time is set against the road rather than against what suits the morning, and the quotation says so. An early start people grumble about is frequently worth more than anything else we could do that day.
One vehicle, one crew
Your goods are loaded once and unloaded once, by the same people, off the same vehicle. Nothing is transferred at a depot overnight and nothing waits on a pallet somewhere for a trunk run.
It is a more expensive way to run distance work and it removes the largest single source of loss. Comparing us against something noticeably cheaper for the same journey? Ask the other firm how many vehicles your furniture will be on.
Into Europe
The same vehicles run into France, Switzerland, Italy and Slovenia by road, with a customs file built from the inventory taken at your property. We are a road firm: sea and air freight are a different trade and we refer them rather than subcontract them.

Questions about out of the weald
- Why do you want an early start?
- The M25 and the Crossing. Getting onto the motorway network before the worst of it is worth more than anything else we can do with the day.
- Will our things be transferred between vehicles?
- No. One vehicle and one crew from your door to the new one, with no depot handling on the way.
- Can it be done in a single day?
- It depends on distance, access at both ends and legal driving hours. Where it cannot be done safely in one, the vehicle is secured overnight with the load aboard and the same crew continues.
- Should we let you pack for a long move?
- For the fragile categories, yes, even if you would do them yourself locally. Cartons packed by a customer are covered for our handling but not for the packing itself, and distance is where that distinction bites.
- Do you go to Scotland?
- Yes, with hours and the overnight arrangement planned before the date is confirmed rather than improvised at the end of a day.
- And into Europe?
- By road, to France, Switzerland, Italy and Slovenia, each with its own page here. No sea freight and no air freight.
What is the house made of?
Both addresses, and roughly when the one you are leaving was built. That second answer tells us which category you are in and what the day needs.
